Platinum Eagles were introduced into the American Eagles Program in 1997, making the 2023 edition the 21st release of the coin. These coins contain 1 oz of .9995 fine platinum, featuring a distinctive design showcasing the Statue of Liberty.

These coins, in particular, are graded as MS-70 coins and sealed in NGC slabs with Ron Harrigal Label.

Ron Harrigal served as the US Mint Director of Design and Engraving from 2015 to 2021. His technical knowledge led the US Mint to pioneer advancements in coin structural integrity. 

Harrigal's contributions include the development of modern edge lettering, now featured on Sacagawea and American Innovation Dollars, and establishing planchet specifications for various coin programs like the American Gold Buffalo and American Palladium Eagle coins. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in determining alloy compositions, dimensions, and die specifications for large-format coins. Harrigal also oversaw the design specifications for dies, enabling the creation of the first concave coins produced in the US, and headed the redesign of the American Silver and Gold Eagle coins in 2021.

The Design

US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti designed the obverse of Platinum Eagles, which showcases the Statue of Liberty’s face. The mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the word “LIBERTY,” and the year of mintage accompany the obverse.

The Heraldic Eagle displayed on the reverse is a creation of Thomas D. Rogers. In the image, the eagle is flying as the sun rises. The inscriptions read: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “.9995,” “PLATINUM,” “1 oz,” and “$100”.
