The Design
The new reverse design created to celebrate the program’s 35th anniversary in 2021 substituted the original Miley Busiek’s family of Bald Eagles.
The Eagle, portrayed by Jennie Norris, has a left-profile close-up, a hooked beak, and a deep staring eye. The engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are vertically lined up.
The coin’s face value, weight, and metal content are on the bottom, through the words “10 DOLLARS” and “1/4 OZ FINE GOLD.”
The obverse remains Saint Gaudens’ original creation, designed to be on the 1907 $20 Double Eagle coin.
Lady Liberty walks forward, with the sun rays in her background, “LIBERTY” arching above her, and the Capitol Building on her lower left. The march ahead represents the nation heading to the future, looking for light and peace. The year of mintage is on the lower right.
An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue coin
NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company is an internationally recognized service that works independently from sovereign mints. It appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.
For NGC, a “First Day of Issue” is a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
The term MS or Mint State describes a coin with the same format as a business circulation one that remained uncirculated. 70 is the grade given to coins with no visible flaws.
