The Parable of the Prodigal Son is one of the most popular Bible stories and one of the motifs depicted in the Scottsdale Mint’s Biblical Series in 2023.

The Scottsdale Mint introduced the Biblical Series in 2015 as a silver coin collection of two-ounce coins exclusively, which displays some of the most relevant biblical stories at each limited strike.

The 2023 edition marks the obverse update from the series. Due to the passing of the beloved Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, the obverse design now features the effigy of King Charles III.

The Design

The new obverse design features the effigy of King Charles III, the new leader of the British Commonwealth Community, designed by Jody Clark.

The King’s right-profile bust is encircled by “CHARLES III,” “NIUE TWO DOLLARS,” “2023”, and “2 OZ 999 FINE SILVER,” which describes the coin’s legal tender, face value, year of issuance, weight, purity, and metal content. 

Gustave Duré’s depiction showcases the prodigal son returning to his father’s house and receiving a festive and grateful welcome from his father and his servants. The engraving “PARABLE OF THE PRODIGAL SON” is inscribed at the bottom rim.

The absence of limiting rims in these coins allows the entire usage of the surface to imprint the reverse design. The antique shadow, allied with the dark luster from the proof finish, emphasizes the aspect of ancientness and highlights the most intricate design details.

The Biblical Series

The Biblical Series debuted in 2015, promising a complete series of 60 two-ounce coins. The “Parable of the Prodigal Son” corresponds to the 49th strike of the series, which was released in 2023. Each reverse side showcases a famous scene described in the Bible and designed by the renowned French artist Gustave Duré.
