2023 1 oz Platinum Maple Leaf Coin
Platinum coins have recently become very sought-after by investors who want to diversify their investment portfolio with varied bullion. Some of the most renowned mints worldwide offer platinum coins, along with their gold and silver counterparts. The Royal Canadian Mint, for instance, started producing Platinum Maple Leaf coins in 1988. Production halted in 2002 due to a high increase in platinum prices.
The RCM brought the 1 oz Platinum Maple Leaf back in 2009, and SD Bullion is now proud to offer the highly-anticipated 2023 release.
Coin Highlights
- Contains 1 oz of .9995 fine platinum in BU condition;
- Face value of CAD 50 and legal tender status guaranteed by the Canadian Government;
- Modern security measures besides the RCM DNA;
- The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II;
- The reverse displays the Sugar Maple Leaf.
The Design
Usually, British Commonwealth nations issue their official coins with the Head of State’s effigy. Because of that, Canadian coins feature Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait in their obverse.
The design stamped on the coin’s obverse showcases an elegant, not crowned 79-year-old Elizabeth II through the eyes of artist Susanna Blunt. The words “ELIZABETH II,” “50 DOLLARS,” and the mint year surround Her Majesty’s bust.
The reverse depicts the Sugar Maple Leaf, a Canadian national symbol. The information engraved refers to the coin’s weight, precious metal content, and fineness in both official languages, English and French. They read: “CANADA,” “9995”, “FINE PLATINUM,” “1 OZ,” “PLATINE PUR.”
Security Features
The Royal Canadian Mint applies the most modern security measures in its products to prevent counterfeiting. There are radial lines engraved on both verses of the coin, and the finish creates a pattern that uniquely deflects light.
In addition, the Bullion DNA technology consists of an individual string of codes registered in the mint’s database, which only specialized scanners can read.
Mintage
The first strike of Platinum Maple Leaf coins occurred in 1988. The standard 1 oz Platinum Maple Leaf debuted along with fractional half, quarter, decimal, and 1/20 oz sizes. The program suspended the platinum coins production in 2003 until 2009, when it returned, striking only the 1 oz version.
The coins contain .9995 fine platinum. They are 2.62 mm thick, with a diameter of 30 mm and reeded edges.
