The Design
The obverse features the former Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-lasting Queen of the British Commonwealth. The portrait is a right-profile bust created by Ian Rank Broadley, surrounded by “ELIZABETH II,” “5 DOLLARS,” “COOK ISLANDS,” and “2023.”
The reverse design has the nymph Arethusa in a left-profile bust. The image is in Ultra-High Relief because of the exclusive Smartminting® Technology.
The two letters “CI” engraved correspond to the Cook Islands, the nation which grants legal tender status to the coins.
The Antique finish applied to the coin’s surfaces provides them a darker tone and old aspect to emphasize the idea of antiquity from its motif. And the edges of the coin are plain.
Arethusa
According to Greek Mythology, Arethusa was a beautiful nymph and companion of the moon goddess Artemis.
Arethusa was bathing in a river belonging to god Alpheus, who fell in love with her beauty. Avoiding his advances, Arethusa went back home to ask Artemis for help and get rid of her stalker.
To free her companion from Alpheus, Artemis transformed Arethusa into a stream under the river, which emerges as a water fountain on the island of Ortygia in Syracuse, Sicily.
