2023 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coins
The American most famous coin program is not limited to gold and silver coins. Since 1997, the US Mint has released 1 oz Platinum Eagles, becoming one of the most sought-after platinum coins in the world.
American Platinum Eagle coins contain 1 oz of .9995 fine platinum in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. They differ from the other Eagles because of their unique design, not taken from any historic coins. 2023 1 oz American Platinum Eagle coins are now available to you online from SD Bullion.
Coin Highlight
- Contains 1 oz of .9995 fine platinum;
- Brilliant Uncirculated condition;
- Face value of USD 100 and legal tender status guaranteed by the US Federal Government;
- The obverse depicts the Statue of Liberty, by John Mercanti;
- The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle by Thomas D. Rogers.
The Design
Unlike the popular designs that stamp the other bullion American Eagles, the Platinum Eagles showcase the same motif from a different point of view.
The obverse depicts the Statue of Liberty’s face, a creation of John Mercanti, Chief Engraver of the US Mint, who also designed the original American Eagle’s reverse.
On this design, the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” which usually appears on the reverse, is on the obverse, along with the words: “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage.
The Heraldic Eagle displayed on the reverse is a creation of Thomas D. Rogers. In the image, the eagle is flying as the sun rises. The inscriptions read: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “.9995,” “PLATINUM,” “1 oz,” and “$100”.
The Mintage
The US Mint introduced the Platinum Eagles in 1997. The American Eagles Program was solid with gold and silver series, and the platinum added another precious metal to the collection.
Since their release, the Platinum Eagles have had annual strikes, except for the years between 2009 and 2013, and again in 2015. The Mint also stroke some fractional sizes of the platinum coin but discontinued their production in 2008.
The standard 1 oz contains 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum, which may have a significant value considering the platinum spot price.
The American Eagles Program
The American Eagles Program debuted in 1986. The bullion market quickly accepted the Gold and the Silver Eagles. Soon, they became essential competitors to the coins already available in the market, like the South African Krugerrands and the Canadian Maple Leafs.
In 1997, the US Mint released the Platinum Eagles for the first time. The 1 oz Platinum Eagles have a face value of $100, the highest in U.S. coinage history. They are also available in proof finish for those who enjoy a collectible coin.
