The Design

The obverse depicts James Earl Fraser’s Native American Chief design, a right-profile bust that combines traces from Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. 

Inscriptions refer to the word “LIBERTY” in front of the Native’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials.

The reverse illustrates a giant American Bison in an upstanding depiction that covers most of the surface, resembling a Buffalo. 

It contains the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” referring to the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.
