The Design

The obverse depicts the fourth official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Raphael Maklouf.

Her Majesty’s depiction is surrounded by “QUEEN ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE TWO DOLLARS,” “2022”, and “2 OZ 999 FINE SILVER,” which inform the coin’s legal tender, face value, year of issuance, weight, purity, and metal content. 

Gustave Duré’s depiction portrays Samson carrying the heavy gates of Gaza with his own hands after escaping from an ambush in the city of Gaza. He rips the gates out and carries them to the top hill that faces the city of Hebron. “SAMSON AND THE GATES OF GAZA” is inscribed at the bottom rim.

The absence of limiting rims in these coins allows the entire usage of the surface to imprint the reverse design. The antique shadow, allied with the dark luster from the proof finish, emphasizes the aspect of ancientness and highlights the most intricate design details.

The Biblical Series debuted in 2015, promising a complete series of 60 two-ounce coins. The “‘Samson and the Gates of Gaza” corresponds to the 46th strike of the series, which was released in 2022.
