The American Platinum Eagle coin is the official and only platinum bullion coin the United States Mint produces. Ever since its inception in 1997, the coin has been an annual release, with a few exceptions between 2009 and 2013 and in 2015. At first, the Mint produced fractional sizes along with the 1-troy-ounce size, but they were discontinued after 2008.

Design

The obverse design of the American Platinum Eagles depicts the face of Lady Liberty. Sculptor and Engraver John Mercanti, former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, created the design based on the Statue of Liberty. We can partly see the crowned figure’s raised right arm, just like in the monument, as she gazes ahead over the Atlantic Ocean. Arching on the outer rim above, in between the spikes of the crown, is the word “LIBERTY”. Next to her face is the mint year 2022 and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”.

The reverse of the American Platinum Eagle bullion coin portrays an eagle soaring, with its wings wide open and the rising sun in the background. Above the eagle is the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, along with the precious metal content and weight, “.9995 PLATINUM 1 OZ.”. The face value of $100 is written below. Thomas D. Rogers was the designer for the reverse.

Mintage

The American Platinum Eagle coin is a yearly release from the US Mint. The US Mint produced fractional sizes in ½ troy oz, ¼ troy oz and 1/10 troy oz, but those were discontinued in 2008. The 1-troy-ounce platinum coin has a thickness of 2.39 mm (0.094 in) and a diameter of 32.7 mm (1.29 in).

It bears a face value of $100, but of course, its intrinsic value is much greater and based on the platinum spot price. American Platinum Eagle coins contain .9995 fine platinum content.

American Eagle Series

The American Eagle series started with silver and gold bullion coins. The program quickly grew in success and in 1997 the U.S. Mint, with approval of the United States Congress, introduced the first American platinum coin into the market.
