Design

The obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt and introduced into the coin in 2005. It features the queen in her 79-year-old self. She is wearing a pearl necklace and earrings rather than her crown. It was the first depiction of the Queen in a coin during her entire reign without her crown. Her name is inscribed on top of the effigy, “ELIZABETH II”, while the bottom face of the obverse reads “5 DOLLARS 2022”, i.e. the denomination and mint year.

The reverse was designed back in 1979 when the coin was introduced into the market. Walter Ott was the designer. He portrayed a sugar maple leaf, with incredible details on the grains and pointed lobes. Encircling the design we can see the inscriptions “CANADA” on top, and “9999 FINE GOLD 1/10 OZ OR PUR 9999” on the bottom, both in English and in French.

In 2015, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced new security features to all weights of the Gold Maple Leaf program. The coin features a series of radial lines on the background fields of both verses.

Mintage

As we have mentioned before, the 1/10 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was an expansion of the program introduced in 1982. The Royal Canadian Mint aimed at addressing a pressing need of the market for more varied and affordable sizes to invest in gold bullion. 

With the introduction of the ¼ and 1/10 troy ounce weights in 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint also started stamping these gold bullion coins with a .9999 fineness. They are one of the few mints in the world to strike their products with .9999 pure gold content.

In addition to the 1/10 troy ounce coin, the Gold Maple Leaf program includes a 1 troy ounce version and the following fractional sizes: ½ troy ounce (CAD$20), ¼ troy ounce (CAD$10),  1⁄20 troy ounce (CAD$1) and 1 gram (CAD$0.50).
