In 2019, the US Mint released the second edition of the three-year Preamble to the Declaration of Independence series.

Through this series, American Platinum Eagle Proof Coins receive an exclusive obverse design paying tribute to an American core value protected in the document. The first strike honored Life, and the second edition, in 2019, celebrates Liberty.

It also carries the “W” mint mark from West Point, the US Mint branch in charge of their production.

The Design

In the 2019 obverse design, Justin Kunz features Lady Liberty positioned like the Statue of Liberty, holding a torch and a book. The torch represents the light that guides freedom and the book, the law that guarantees equality. Her parted lips suggest freedom of speech.

The wild terrain in the background symbolizes American freedom to explore new territory and new ways of life.

The engravings on this side are “2019,” “Liberty” in handwriting style, and the mottos “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” 

The reverse design, standard for all coins of the series, features an eagle in flight with an olive branch in its talons, as designed by Patricia Lucas-Morris. 

The inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the coin’s face value of “$100”, the “W” mint mark on the right, and the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity, which read: “1 oz 9995 PLATINUM.”

Because it is a proof coin, it showcases mirror-like background fields contrasting with the matte design elements.
