2018 PCGS SP-70 First Strike 1 oz American Gold Eagle Burnished Coin
Gold Eagles are the US official gold bullion coin. They are made of 22k gold and contain a full troy ounce of gold, making them slightly larger than gold coins of the same weight. The alloy contains 3% silver and 5.33% copper for added durability.
The US Mint crafts Gold Eagles in different sizes and finishes, which includes Burnished versions.
Burnished Gold Eagles receive a special treatment that polishes the blanks and removes unwanted oxides, giving them a matte appearance with enhanced design details.

The Design
The obverse symbolizes the nation’s progress to enlightenment and peace.

The reverse portrays nesting Bald Eagles as a family. The accompanying engravings read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the two mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST. ” It also features the coin’s face value, weight, and metal content through “50 DOLLARS” and “1 OZ FINE GOLD.”
Burnished Coins
A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.
A PCGS SP-70 Coin
PCGS (Professional Coins Grading Service) is globally renowned for appraising and certifying coins according to the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.
According to the scale, SP stands for Specimen, describing a coin that is not a proof coin but is superior to a standard circulation coin. The grade 70 is attributed to perfect coins, which show no signs of flaws.
According to PCGS, “First Strike” refers to publicly available coins within the first 30 production days.
