In 2018, the US Mint celebrated thirty years of the introduction of Platinum Eagles in the American Eagle Program by releasing a unique three-year series of Platinum Eagle Proof Coins inspired by the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence.

Each new annual strike pays tribute to an American core value protected in the document.

The inaugural strike in the series was a tribute to Life, exceptionally reflected through the obverse design. It also carries the “W” mint mark from West Point, the US Mint branch in charge of their production.

The Design

The obverse, designed by Justin Kunz, is full of symbols. It showcases Lady Liberty, the feminine personification of the nation, as an ordinary woman teaching a young child how to sow seeds in a vast field of crops. Her sword represents the strength to defend life, the trees and steam represent the environment, and the need to preserve it, and the furrowed earth represents the work demanded to sustain life.

Lady Liberty is flanked by the engravings “2018,”“ Life” in handwriting style, and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” arches on top, while “LIBERTY” lies at the bottom.

The reverse design is standard for all series coins. It consists of Designer Patricia Lucas-Morris’ depiction of an eagle in flight with an olive branch in its talons. 

The inscriptions on this side start with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and are complemented by the coin’s face value of “$100”, the “W” mint mark on the right, and the coin’s weight, metal content and purity, which read: “1 oz 9995 PLATINUM.”

Because it is a proof coin, it showcases mirror-like background fields contrasting with the matte design elements.
