The US Mint has been delivering American Gold Eagles, made of 22k gold, since 1986. The debuting release featured a one-ounce coin, but the US Mint broadened the series to include fractional sizes for Gold Eagles.

John M. Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, created numerous designs for US circulating, commemorative, and bullion coins, including the original reverse of the Silver Eagles. In 2021, he was recognized as one of the most influential figures in numismatics.

The Design

The obverse portrayal showcases Lady Liberty moving forward carrying a torch and an olive branch. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed above her, alongside the Capitol Building and the coin’s year of issue.

The beloved reverse illustration displays a female eagle sheltering her hatchling under her wing while the male eagle stands guard over their nest. 

It includes "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "IN GOD WE TRUST," weight, metal content, and face value, which states "1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD—25 DOLLARS."
