The Design

The obverse design stamps the fourth official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II through a left-profile bust of a young adult crowned Queen, as created by Raphael Maklouf.

Her Majesty’s portrait has inscriptions surrounding it, which read “QUEEN ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE TWO DOLLARS,” “2017”, and “2 OZ 999 FINE SILVER,” informing the coin’s legal tender, face value, year of issuance, weight, purity, and metal content. 

The baptism of Jesus, featured by Gustave Duré on the reverse side, displays Jesus standing on the Jordan riverbank, accompanied by John the Baptist, who has a halo over his head, and a crowd that watches the symbolic moment in which John immerses Jesus with water. The coin’s name, “BAPTISM OF JESUS,” is inscribed at the bottom rim.

The absence of limiting rims in these coins allows the entire usage of the surface to imprint the reverse design. The antique shadow, allied with the dark luster from the proof finish, emphasizes the aspect of ancientness and highlights the most intricate design details.

The Biblical Series debuted in 2015, promising a complete series of 60 two-ounce coins. The “The Baptism of Jesus” corresponds to the 13th strike of the series released in 2017.
