The Design

The effigy of the former Queen Elizabeth II imprinted in the obverse is Raphael Maklouf’s creation, which consists of a left-profile bust of a young adult crowned Queen.

It is encircled by engravings regarding legal tender, face value, year of issuance, weight, purity, and metal content. The inscriptions read “QUEEN ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE TWO DOLLARS,” “2017”, and “2 OZ 999 FINE SILVER.”

The biblical scene portrayed by Gustave Duré on the reverse side describes the moment in which Chaim, taken by jealousy and envy, kills his brother Abel, whose body lies on the floor. The only engraving on this side refers to the coin’s name, “THE DEATH OF ABEL,” at the bottom.

The absence of limiting rims in these coins allows the entire usage of the surface to imprint the reverse design. The antique shadow, allied with the dark luster from the proof finish, emphasizes the aspect of ancientness and highlights the most intricate design details.
