Each year, the Silver Kookaburra showcases a unique reverse design featuring the beloved native bird, making it a favorite among collectors worldwide.

The Design
The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. This right-facing portrait of the mature, crowned monarch is surrounded by the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” and “1 DOLLAR.”
On the reverse, the coin displays a detailed image of the kookaburra, Australia’s iconic laughing bird, perched on a gum tree branch surrounded by leaves. Just beside the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark, a small dragon privy mark pays tribute to the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese Lunar Calendar.
The inscription “AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA” arches above the central image, while the bottom of the design includes the coin’s specifications: “2012 1 oz 999 SILVER.”
