The Australian Gold Nugget is one of the coins produced by the Perth Mint in 1987.

The series comprised gold coins, 99.99% pure, weighing 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz, with monetary denomination and legal tender status fully guaranteed by the Australian government.

The Perth Mint gathered these four coins from the 1987 strike into a customized display box so investors and avid collectors could acquire the whole series through a single purchase.

The display box contains some damage and the wood is slightly chipped as displayed in the images.

The Coin’s Design

The obverse showcases Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait designed by Raphael Maklouf. It consists of a crowned right profile bust, encircled by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II, “AUSTRALIA,” and the coin’s face value.

Dr. Stuart Devlin designed the reverse, which features the “Bobby Dazzler” nugget, an exceptional gold nugget found in 1899 in Western Australia. 

Besides the engraving that identifies this landmark of Australian mining history, “BOBBY DAZZLER 1899,” each coin is surrounded by inscriptions that describe weight, metal content, and year of issuance.
