1985 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin

Since its premiere in 1979, the Gold Maple Leaf Series has had regular annual strikes of its 1 Troy oz gold bullion coin.

In 1985, the Royal Canadian Mint released its seventh edition, which, besides the 1 oz version, included ¼ oz and 1/10 oz gold coins.

Gold Maple Leaf Coins are one of the most traditional gold bullion coins in the market, which appeals to investors looking for a solid investment in tangible gold bullion, but especially to coin enthusiasts who appreciate the beautiful design and craftsmanship of these pieces.

Coin Highlights

  • Contains 1 oz of .9999 fine gold;
  • Bears a CAD 50 denomination and legal tender status;
  • IRAs eligible;
  • A Royal Canadian Mint regular product;
  • Queen Elizabeth II's obverse design;
  • Maple Leaf reverse design.

The Design

The 1985 Gold Maple Leaf Series strike repeats the original design, engraved over a plain background surfaced coin.

Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy is imprinted on the obverse side and consists of a 39-year-old portrait of the Monarch. It includes inscriptions that describe Her Majesty’s name, the coin’s face value, and the year of issuance through “ELIZABETH II,” “50 DOLLARS,” and “1985.”

The reverse depicts a large maple leaf, a national symbol. “CANADA” is inscribed on top, while weight and metal content are engraved at the bottom, in French and English, which read: “FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR.” The coin’s purity appears on both sides of the leaf image through “9999.”

Mintage

Gold Maple Leaf Coins premiered in 1979. The debuting coin weighs 1 Troy oz, 2.80mm in thickness and 30mm in diameter, with a fineness of .999 and a face value of CAD 50, ensured by the Canadian government.

In 1982, the coin’s purity level was increased to 99.99%. The Royal Canadian Mint also included fractional coins of 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz in the collection.

The 1985 mintage of 1 Troy oz Gold Maple Leaf coins accounted for 1,747,500 units.
