The Design
The 1985 Gold Maple Leaf Series strike repeats the original design, engraved over a plain background surfaced coin.
Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy is imprinted on the obverse side and consists of a 39-year-old portrait of the Monarch. It includes inscriptions that describe Her Majesty’s name, the coin’s face value, and the year of issuance through “ELIZABETH II,” “50 DOLLARS,” and “1985.”
The reverse depicts a large maple leaf, a national symbol. “CANADA” is inscribed on top, while weight and metal content are engraved at the bottom, in French and English, which read: “FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR.” The coin’s purity appears on both sides of the leaf image through “9999.”
Mintage
Gold Maple Leaf Coins premiered in 1979. The debuting coin weighs 1 Troy oz, 2.80mm in thickness and 30mm in diameter, with a fineness of .999 and a face value of CAD 50, ensured by the Canadian government.
In 1982, the coin’s purity level was increased to 99.99%. The Royal Canadian Mint also included fractional coins of 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz in the collection.
The 1985 mintage of 1 Troy oz Gold Maple Leaf coins accounted for 1,747,500 units.
