1899 NGC MS-63 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin 

From 1850 to 1907, the US Mint produced Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins as the official $20 circulating coin.

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle contains a substantial gold content, totaling .9675 oz, and showcases iconic national symbols as designed by James B. Longacre.

Like other Pre-1933 Gold Coins, the $20 Liberty Double Eagle was heavily targeted during the economic crisis of the 1930s. Due to their gold content, many of these coins were hoarded and melted down, leading to a significant reduction in their availability on the market.

The Design

The obverse features the bust of Lady Liberty enhanced by a tiara engraved with “LIBERTY.” Liberty’s portrayal is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars, referring to the Thirteen Original Colonies, and has the year of mintage engraved at the bottom rim.

The reverse design Showcases the Heraldic Eagle surrounded by the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” followed by the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

The Heraldic Eagle has spread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak. The coin’s denomination engraved at the bottom reads “TWENTY DOLLARS.”

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is an internationally recognized third-party service working independently from sovereign mints to appraise and grade coins.

It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale as a parameter to rank coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition. 

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
