The Design

The story behind “Pecunia Non Olet”

One of the curious facts that made the emperor Vespasian a well known governor was the taxing of urine from public urinals from the city, called the Urine Tax.

Lower classes were supposed to urinate into pots and empty them into cesspools. The urine collected from these pools was then sold as an ingredient for chemical processes, like tanning, wool production, the extraction of ammonia. Manufacturers would pay the Urine Tax to get the needed ingredient.

When Titus, Vespasian’s son, questioned about the immoral nature of the money collected, Vespasian held up a gold coin and replied to Titus with another question. “Do you feel offended by the smell of it?”  Vespasian continued, “Yet it comes from urine.”

“Pecunia Non-Olet,” translates to 'Money doesn’t stink', meaning the value of money is not affected by its origin.
