The Design
The reverse design of Canadian Maple Leaf coins showcases a sugar maple leaf in a central position encircled by information regarding the coin’s weight, metal content, and fineness in both official languages, English and French. The inscriptions read: “CANADA,” “9995”, “FINE PLATINUM,” “1 OZ,” and “PLATINE PUR.”
The 2024 strike introduces the new obverse design, which depicts King Charles III in a left profile effigy. The inscriptions surrounding His Majesty’s bust read: “CHARLES III,” “50 DOLLARS,” referring to the coin’s denomination, and “2024” for the year of mintage.
Security Features
The Royal Canadian Mint invests a lot in anti-counterfeiting features to maintain its high standards. Radial lines cover both background verses of the coin, and the finish creates a pattern that uniquely deflects light. A small maple leaf on the reverse lower right, with “24” from the year of issuance, micro-engraved on it, is part of the system.
In addition, the Bullion DNA technology consists of an individual string of codes registered in the mint’s database, which only its specialized scanners can read.
History of Mintage
The first strike of Platinum Maple Leaf coins occurred in 1988, right after the release of the Platinum Eagles. One-troy-ounce Platinum Maple Leaf debuted with fractional half, quarter, decimal, and 1/20 oz sizes. The program suspended the platinum coins production in 2003 until 2009, when it returned, issuing only the 1 oz version.
The coins contain .9995 fine platinum. They are 2.62 mm thick, with a diameter of 30 mm and reeded edges.
