The Gold Kangaroo Design
The Australian Kangaroo Program surprises the bullion market every year with exclusive new designs of this native marsupial on its coin’s reverse side. The animal became a national symbol because, like a kangaroo, Australia is always moving forward and evolving.
The reverse inscriptions accompanying the image usually describe the coin’s year of mintage, weight, fineness, and metal content.
The obverse displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the long-lasting leader of the British Commonwealth of nations. The engravings encircling her image are: “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” and “15 DOLLARS.”
According to the Mint’s announcement, the effigy of King Charles III will be on the Gold Kangaroo’s obverse starting in the second half of 2023.
The Australian Perth Mint
Initially founded to be a local branch of the Royal Mint, the Australian Perth Mint started operating in 1899 in Perth when the country was a British colony. With Australian independence, the mint came into the ownership of the Western Australian Government, which maintained its operations by making bullion coins to meet internal and international interests.
