2000-(P) 1000 Kronur Leif Erikson Millennium Commemorative Silver Coin
Celebrating the 1,000th anniversary of the voyage of Leif Erikson to North America, the US Mint and Iceland released a two-coin set to mark the millennium of Erikson's discovery of the New World.
Leif Erikson, son of Eric the Red, became the first European to reach North America around 1000 A.D. After hearing tales from trader Bjarni Herjulfsson, he sailed west from Norway to Greenland but was blown off course and discovered new lands. Erikson explored areas now believed to be Labrador and Newfoundland, naming one region “Vinland” for its rich resources. However, conflicts with Native Americans forced him to abandon the settlement and return to Greenland within a year.
This coin, in particular, is the Icelandic version of the coin set. It contains .7734 troy oz of actual silver content and a face value of 1000 Kronur, Iceland’s official currency.
Today, you can acquire the 2000-(P) 1000 Kronur Leif Erikson Millennium Commemorative Silver Coin at SD Bullion.

The Design
The Leif Erikson Silver 1000 Kronur coin, created by Icelandic artist Throstur Magnusson, features on its obverse an artistic rendition of Stirling Calder’s statue of Leif Erikson. This statue was gifted to Iceland by the United States in 1930 to celebrate the thousandth anniversary of the nation’s parliament.
On the reverse, the coin displays a stylized version of Iceland’s Coat of Arms, depicting the four traditional protectors of the island—the eagle, dragon, bull, and giant—who guard Iceland’s northern, western, eastern, and southern regions.
The engravings distributed over the design on both sides are written in Icelandic and correspond to “LEIF ERIKSON,” “ICELAND,” “FOUNDER OF NORTH AMERICA,” the coin’s face value, and year of issuance.

This commemorative coin marks a pivotal moment in history, celebrating the millennium of Leif Erikson’s arrival in North America around the year 1000.
