PCGS MS-66 $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin (Random Year)

The US Mint introduced the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coin in 1907. This coin was regularly issued until 1932 and became one of the most iconic pieces in American coinage history.

The coin received its moniker from its designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. He was personally chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt to redesign the American coins at the beginning of the 20th century.

These coins contain .9675 Troy oz of gold bullion content, with legal tender status and a $20 face value.

The first two strikes, in 1907 and 1908, did not have the traditional American motto “In God We Trust.” It was only incorporated in the middle of 1908. Therefore, through this purchasing option, you are guaranteed to receive a coin with dates varying from 1908 to 1932.

The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was an Irish-American sculptor who embodied the ideals of the American Renaissance in his work.

Personally commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to redesign the American coins at the turn of the 20th century, Gaudends’ most famous work is arguably the Double Eagle coins, first struck in 1907 by the US Mint.

On the obverse, Lady Liberty walks forward with the rising sun on her back, holding a lit torch with her right hand held high as she leads the country toward enlightenment. With her left hand, she holds an olive branch, symbolizing the country’s everlasting desire for peace.

Another important design element is the Capitol Building, visible on the lower left, representing the country’s commitment to democracy. The mint year is inscribed on the right face of the design, and the word “LIBERTY” is engraved on the outer rim on top.

The reverse depicts a bald eagle amidst flight. The sun is also rising in the background. Together, the two symbols symbolize freedom and progress. The inscriptions on this side read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.” The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed on the rising sun, close to the bottom rim.

A PCGS MS-66 Coin

The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service is an independent coin grading service that uses the Sheldon Scale as a parameter. The scale ranks coins and other numismatic items from 1 to 70 accordingly. The greater the grade, the better the condition.

An MS coin indicates a coin that retains its Mint State condition, that is, with its original luster intact. A coin receives Grade 66 when it is well-struck with very few marks and hairlines, not in focal areas.
