The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was an Irish-American sculptor who was personally commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to redesign the American coins at the turn of the 20th century.

Gaudends’ most famous work turned out to be the Double Eagle coins, struck between 1907 and 1932.

On the obverse, Lady Liberty strides forward with the sun's rays on her back. She holds a lit torch with her right hand held high as she leads the country toward enlightenment. With her left hand, she holds an olive branch, symbolizing the country’s enduring desire for home and international peace. The word “LIBERTY” arches on top.

The Capitol Building is another visible design element, placed on the lower left, representing the country’s commitment to democracy. The mint year is inscribed on the right face. The whole design is encircled by 6-pointed stars.

The reverse depicts a bald eagle in flight. The sun is rising in the background with the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” On top, the inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”

A PCGS MS-65 Coin

The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service is an independent coin grading service that uses the Sheldon Scale as a parameter. The scale ranks coins and other numismatic items from 1 to 70 accordingly. The greater the grade, the better the condition.

An MS coin indicates a coin that retains its Mint State condition, that is, with its original luster intact. A coin graded MS-65 has minor marks or hairline, mostly out of focus areas.
