PCGS MS-64 $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin (Random Year)

Designed by one of the most famous artists and sculptors in the US Mint’s history, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the Double Eagle was the United States $20 circulating coin from 1907 to 1932.

These coins contain .9675 Troy oz of gold bullion content and one of the most beautiful designs in American coinage: the St. Gaudens’s Lady Liberty.

The first two strikes, in 1907 and 1908, did not have the traditional American motto “In God We Trust,” which was only incorporated in the middle of 1908.

Right now, you can purchase random year $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins from SD Bullion, graded MS-64 by PCGS. Mintage will vary from 1908 to 1932.

The Design

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was personally chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt to redesign American coinage at the beginning of the 20th Century.

His most famous work is arguably the Double Eagle coins, regularly issued between 1907 and 1932.

On the obverse, Gaudens depicted Lady Liberty, the feminine personification of the United States of America, marching forward (toward the viewer), holding a torch in her right hand, a symbol of enlightenment, and a branch of olives in her left, representing the country’s enduring desire for peace.

On her back, we can see the rising sun’s rays with the word “LIBERTY” arching over on top. The Capitol Building is visible on the lower left, and the mint year on the right.

The reverse is a depiction of a flying bald eagle with the sun rising in the background. The inscriptions on this side read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.” The motto “In God We Trust” is inscribed right above the rising sun.

A PCGS MS-64 Coin

The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service is an independent coin grading service that uses the Sheldon Scale as a parameter. The scale ranks coins and other numismatic items from 1 to 70 according. The greater the grade, the better the condition.

An MS coin indicates a coin that retains its Mint State condition, that is, with its original luster intact. A coin is attributed the Grade 64 when it presents an average or better strike, with minor marks and hairlines.
