The Design

Both verses of the coin were designed by Irish-American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who was personally commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to redesign the American coins at the turn of the 20th century.

On the obverse, Gaudens depicted Lady Liberty striding forward with the sun's rays on her back. She holds a lit torch with her right hand, symbolizing enlightenment and freedom of thought. With her left hand, she holds an olive branch, representing the country’s enduring desire for peace. The word “LIBERTY” arches on top.

The Capitol Building is depicted on the lower left. Its placement on the design represents the country’s commitment to democracy. The mint year is inscribed on the right face. The whole design is encircled by 6-pointed stars.

This obverse design was so popular the US Mint later revamped it in 1986 to be used for the modern-day American Gold Eagle coins.

The reverse displays a flying bald eagle with the sun rising in the background. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed right above the sun. On the outer rim on top, the inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
