PCGS MS-63 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin holds immense numismatic value.

The US Mint first struck them in 1850 with a high gold content corresponding to .9675 oz of gold, to be a regular circulation coin, with legal tender status and a twenty-dollar monetary denomination.

The production ceased after years of regular strikes in 1907 when the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin replaced it.

Several $20 Liberty Double Eagle coins disappeared during the economic collapse of the 1930s, like other Pre-1933 Gold Coins. Due to the rise of gold prices, coins were hoarded and melted because of their gold content, which contributed to these coins’ historical and numismatic value.

Today, SD Bullion presents $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins of assorted mint years, sealed in PCGS slabs and graded as MS-63 samples.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, graded, and encapsulated as an MS-63 coin by the PCGS;
  • Contains .9675 oz of gold content;
  • Produced by the US Mint;
  • Pre-1933 American Gold Coin;
  • Bears legal tender status and a face value of USD 20;
  • Longacre’s Liberty Double Eagle design stamps the obverse;
  • Heraldic Eagle is on the reverse;
  • Of assorted years of mintage.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty is displayed with her left profile and wears a tiara engraved with the word “LIBERTY.” James B. Longacre designed her surrounded by thirteen five-pointed stars, which refer to the Thirteen Original Colonies. The year of mintage is at the bottom rim.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle has spread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arch over the image.

The reverse design may feature slightly different elements. For example, the presence or absence of the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the Eagle and the coin’s denomination engraved at the bottom, in some written “TWENTY DOLLARS,” while in others, “TWENTY D.”

A PCGS MS-63 Coin

The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service is an independent third-party company in the numismatic market appraising and grading coins based on the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business sample format that remained uncirculated.

Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines, detracting scuff marks or defects throughout the design. But still attractive overall appearance.

Random Year Purchase

The Random Year Purchase allows investors to acquire authentic $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins, sealed and certified by the PCGS as MS-63 samples, for more attractive premiums. However, their mintage is randomly selected according to our inventory availability at the time of shipping.
