The Design

The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design for Lady Liberty. She strides forward with the sun's rays on her back and a lit torch in her right hand, symbolizing enlightenment and freedom of thought. With her left hand, she holds an olive branch, a symbol of peace. The word “LIBERTY” arches on top.

The Capitol Building is depicted on the lower left. Its placement on the design represents America’s commitment to democracy and Republican values. The mint year is inscribed on the right face. The whole design is encircled by 6-pointed stars.

This depiction was so popular that the US Mint later reused it in 1986 in the modern-day American Gold Eagle bullion coins.

The reverse displays a flying bald eagle with the rising sun in the backdrop. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed right above the sun. On the outer rim on top are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
