American Gold Buffalos are official 24k gold coins in the US. The US Mint first released them in 2006 as a one-ounce coin, made of of 99.99% pure gold, with regular strikes concentrated in the West Point branch.

The Design

The obverse consists of a revamp of James Earle Fraser’s 1913 Indian Head design.

The image showcases a right-profile bust of a Native American Indian Chief, combining traces from three different tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. 

The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed in front of the Native’s forehead, “2023” for the year of mintage, and an “F,” to the artist’s initials, right under the year, on the lower left.

The reverse side features an American Bison, which resembles a Buffalo, hence the moniker. 

The animal is in an upstanding position. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are engraved on top, and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” lies on the animal’s lower back. A second motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is near the animal’s muzzle. The information regarding the coin’s weight, metal content, purity, and denomination is beneath it: “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.”

An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue Coin

The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is a renowned third-party service that appraises and grades coins, independently of sovereign mints, using the Sheldon Grading Scale. The scale ranges from 1 to 70, and coins are ranked according to their condition.

For the NGC, a “First Day of Issue” is a coin manufactured on day #1 of mintage in the US Mint. MS stands for Mint State, which means the analyzed coin has the same shape as a popular circulation coin but remained uncirculated. Grade 70 is the highest grade on the Sheldon Scale, attributed to a flawless coin.
