NGC MS-65 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year

The Liberty Double Eagle Coin is also known as the Liberty Head Gold Coin. The moniker comes from James B. Longacre’s obverse design, which presents Lady Liberty in a left-profile bust.

The US Mint produced Liberty Double Eagle Coins from 1850 to 1907 as a USD 20 popular circulation coin until the arrival of the newly designed Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin.

Like most Pre-1933 Gold Coins, the $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin was targeted in the 1930s during the economic collapse because it contains .9675 oz of gold content.

Today, $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins of varied years of issuance, certified as MS-65 coins by the NGC, are available at SD Bullion.

The Design

Lady Liberty, depicted in the obverse design, was created by James B. Longacre.

She wears a tiara engraved with the word “LIBERTY” and has thirteen five-pointed stars on the border, referring to the Thirteen Original Colonies. The year of mintage is at the bottom rim.

The Heraldic Eagle features on the reverse has spread wings and the national shield in front of its chest. It carries arrows in its talons and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak. On top, read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

Over the 50 years of mintage, some reverse design details varied. The presence or absence of the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the Eagle is noticed, and in the way the coin’s denomination is engraved at the bottom. Some may display “TWENTY DOLLARS,” while others “TWENTY D.”

An NGC MS-65 Coin

The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company works in the numismatic market independently from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins based on the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

An MS-65 coin means that the analyzed coin has the same format as a business coin that still displays high-quality luster despite its aged mintage. Minor contact marks and scatters may be noticeable, but the coin has an overall quality above the average.

Random Year Purchase
