NGC MS-63 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin debuted in 1850 with James B. Longacre’s design, a prelude to the American Gold Eagle design.

The US Mint produced them weighing .9675 oz of gold, a 20-dollar denomination, and legal tender status because, at that time, the $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin was a regular coin of widespread circulation.

The production ceased after over 50 years, in 1907, when the US Mint replaced the Liberty design with the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle design.

Due to the rise of gold prices in the 1930s, several $20 Liberty Double Eagle and other Pre-1933 Gold Coins disappeared. They were hoarded and melted during the economic collapse.

Today, you can acquire authentic $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins of assorted mint years, sealed in NGC slabs and graded as MS-63 samples, from SD Bullion.

The Design

The obverse design presents the effigy of Lady Liberty in a left-profile close-up, in which she wears a tiara engraved with the word “LIBERTY.” The depiction is encircled by thirteen five-pointed stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies. The year of mintage is at the bottom rim.

The reverse design displays the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arching over the Heraldic Eagle, which has spread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak.

Over the years, the reverse design featured slightly different elements. For example, the presence or absence of the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the Eagle and the coin’s denomination engraved at the bottom, in some written “TWENTY DOLLARS,” while in others, “TWENTY D.”

An NGC MS-63 Coin

The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is an internationally recognized third-party service working independently from sovereign mints to appraise and grade coins.

It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale as a parameter to rank coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced for widespread circulation that remained uncirculated.

Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines, detracting scuff marks or defects throughout the design. But still attractive overall appearance.
