NGC MS-62 $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin With Motto (Random Year)

The Double Eagle Gold Coin circulated from 1907 until 1933 as the American twenty-dollar coin in the United States.

With .9675 Troy oz of gold content, the Double Eagle Gold Coin has a USD 20 face value and legal tender status. As a demonstration of its acceptance and fame, its Saint Gaudens design was reused in the American Gold Eagle coins one more time in 1986.

The first strikes of the $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin do not show the traditional American motto “In God We Trust.” It was, however, only added to the reverse later, in the second half of 1908.

Today, SD Bullion provides $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins, sealed and certified by the third-party grading service NGC as MS-62 samples, from those minted between 1908 and 1932.

The Design

The reverse depicts the Bald Eagle soaring above the sun. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS” are arched at the top edge of the coin, right above the eagle.

The Double Eagle obverse design depicts Lady Liberty, the feminine personification of the United States, striding forward as a symbol of the country’s progress. The torch she carries in her right hand represents enlightenment, while the olive branch in her left-hand means peace.

The word “LIBERTY” appears in the middle of the sun's rays on the back. A small representation of the Capitol Building is placed on the lower left, and the year of issuance is displayed on the right.

An NGC MS-62 Coin

The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is a third-party grading service that accesses coin conditions and attests to their authenticity using the Sheldon Scale as a parameter. The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition, with 1 being the poorest and 70 perfectly conserved.

An MS condition coin means a coin conserved in its Mint State, that is, a coin issued as a business circulation but has never circulated, and because of that, it still retains its original Mint Lust. These Mint State coins are usually graded between 60 and 70. Grade 62 indicates that the coin is indeed uncirculated, though it is slightly weak or average strike with no trace of wear.
