NGC MS-62 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin was the official 20-dollar circulating coin in the US from 1850-1907.

The US Mint produced these coins with .9675 oz of gold content, legal tender status, a USD 20 face value, and a James B. Longacre design, which made them popularly recognized as the Liberty Head coin.

The economic collapse of the 1930s seriously affected the $20 Liberty Double Eagle. Like other Pre-1933 Gold Coins, several $20 Liberty Double Eagle gold coins were hoarded and melted because of their gold content.

At SD Bullion, you can acquire surviving $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins of assorted mint years, certified by the NGC as MS-62 coins.

The Design

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin was named Liberty Head Coin because of James B. Longacre’s design, which showcases Lady Liberty’s left-profile close-up.

In the image, she wears a tiara engraved with “LIBERTY”, and thirteen five-pointed stars that refer to the Thirteen Original Colonies encircle the whole image. The year of mintage is at the bottom rim.

On the reverse side, the design starts with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” inscribed on top. The Heraldic Eagle has the national shield centered on its chest, spread wings, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak.

Slightly different design elements vary on the reverse design. For example, the presence or absence of the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the Eagle and the coin’s denomination engraved at the bottom, in some written “TWENTY DOLLARS,” while in others, “TWENTY D.”

An NGC MS-62 Coin

Independent third-party services, like the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company, evaluate and grade coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70, according to their condition.

An MS-Mint State coin is referred to as a widespread circulation coin that has never circulated. Grade 62 suggests that the coin may present marks and hairlines in focal areas, noticeable scuff marks, and below-average planchet quality. But acceptable overall appearance.
