NGC MS-61 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year

The US Mint introduced the Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin in 1850 as an American twenty-dollar coin for widespread circulation. Therefore, the Liberty Head is a regular business coin weighing .9675 oz of gold content, with legal tender status.

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin production ceased in 1907 when the US Mint revamped the $20 gold coin with the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle design.

The high inflation of gold prices in the 1930s resulted in a massive hoarding and meltdown movement of gold coins. Several $20 Liberty Double Eagles and other Pre-1933 Gold Coins disappeared in the meantime, seriously affecting the availability of these coins in the bullion market.

You can find some surviving samples of $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins of varied mint years, sealed in NGC slabs and graded as MS-61 coins at SD Bullion.

The Design

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin design was a creation of James B. Longacre.

The left-profile close-up of Lady Liberty on the obverse granted the coin the famous moniker of Liberty Head.

Lady Liberty’s depiction is a bust, in which she wears a tiara inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.”

On the outer rim, thirteen five-pointed stars represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage lies at the bottom.

On the reverse side, the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches on top, followed by the Heraldic Eagle portrait, which centers the national shield on its chest. The eagle has spread wings, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak.

Slightly different design elements vary on the reverse design. For example, the presence or absence of the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the Eagle and the coin’s denomination engraved at the bottom, in some written “TWENTY DOLLARS,” while in others, “TWENTY D.”

An NGC MS-61 Coin

The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is an internationally recognized service that appraises coins, apart from sovereign mint, using the Sheldon Grading Scale to grade them from 1 to 70, according to their condition.

An MS-Mint State coin is a business coin that has never circulated. Grade 61 indicates that the coin’s mint luster may be diminished, with clusters of minor contact marks, noticeable hairlines, and poor eye appeal.
