The Design
The obverse of these coins dates back over 100 years. It was originally created for the 1906 $20 Double Eagle gold coin. Though the denomination was discontinued in 1933, the US Mint decided to revamp the classic design for the American Gold Eagle coins, first struck in 1986. In the image, Lady Liberty walks forward with the sun's rays on her back and the Capitol Building on the lower left. She carries a lit torch, symbolizing enlightenment and an olive branch for the nation’s everlasting desire for peace. Six-pointed stars encircle the design with the word “LIBERTY” arching on the upper side of the rim and the mint year below.
The reverse displays Jennie Norris's new bald eagle design. Her creation debuted in the 2021 mintage and became an instant success. She represented a bald eagle in a close-up of its face, with highly depicted details on the feathers and beak. The eyes, especially, are gazing ahead earnestly, representing strength and determination. The inscriptions on top are: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” On the bottom rim, the inscriptions read: “50 DOLLARS” for face value and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD “ for weight and precious metal content.
