The Design

Honoring the American heritage, the obverse depicts a Native American Chief’s right profile. This portrait is a reviewed version of James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head Nickel, issued for the first time in 1913. 

This design combines traces from different Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The word “LIBERTY” arches in front of the Chief’s forehead, while the year of issuance and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials, are on the lower left.

The coin’s moniker comes from its reverse design, which features a giant American Bison in a left-side upstanding position, resembling a Buffalo. 

The inscriptions on this side start with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arching over the buffalo, along with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The second motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is on the lower left, near the buffalo’s muzzle. The coin’s face value, weight, fineness, and metal content are on the bottom and read: “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.” 

The Mintage

Gold Buffalo coins are an exclusive production of the West Point branch, one of the US Mint’s official facilities.

Each coin weighs 1 oz of .9999 pure gold, with a 32.7 mm diameter (1.287 in) and a thickness of 2.95 mm (0.116 in) with reeded edges.

The coins are legal tender and hold a $50 face value, guaranteed by the US Federal Government.

The MintCertified™ First30 Sealed Tube

The MintCertified™ First30 Sealed Tube consists of a specific holder which houses twenty coins, chosen among the Gold Buffalo Coins coined in the first 30 days of production. The tubes are certified at the West Point branch, placed in a strapped box, and immediately sealed with a plastic sleeve to guarantee the coins are preserved during packing until reaching their final destination.
