2024 1 oz Year of the Dragon Purple Silver Coin - Lunar Series III

The Lunar Series is a regular strike in the Australian Perth Mint and is currently in its third cycle of mintage.

Based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the series releases annual editions showcasing the regent animal of the year. Therefore, in 2024, the Silver Lunar Series III presents the Dragon as the motif in an exclusive depiction and limited issue.

This coin is a one-ounce silver bullion piece that is 99.99% pure. But, unlike its counterparts in the series, this version showcases a colored depiction of the Dragon with vivid tones of purple.

Coin Highlights

  • Contains 1 oz of .9999 fine silver;
  • Colored Coin;
  • A Perth Mint product limited to 5,000 units;
  • Housed in an exclusive illustrated presentation card;
  • 5th edition of the Lunar Series III;
  • Holds a $1 face value and legal tender status in Australia;
  • The monochromatic obverse features Queen Elizabeth II;
  • Colored reverse design featuring the Dragon.

The Design

The reverse design features the Dragon, depicted with an intense purple that covers all its twisted body. Tones of red, light blue, and orange highlight other design details, like the pearl the dragon is gazing upon.

The coin’s background, imprinted with clouds and waves, remains silver.

The Dragon’s corresponding Chinese symbol and the inscription “DRAGON 2024” lie on the left, while on the right, “P125” stands for the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint.

|Unlike the colored reverse side, the obverse is monochromatic. It showcases Jody Clark’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing the Diadem State Crown.

The image is encircled by “ELIZABETH II,” “1952-2022,” “AUSTRALIA,” “1 oz 9999 Ag,” and “1 DOLLAR,” referring to the former Queen’s name and reigning period, the coin’s origin, weight, fineness, metal content, and face value.

The Dragon in the Chinese Culture

The Dragon has long been associated with the emperor and its lineage. It is a symbol of wisdom, enlightenment, strength, and command.

Therefore, it is a powerful sign of abundance, wealth, and good fortune. The Dragon is the fifth animal from the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Because of that, each Year of the Dragon is expected to attract the symbolism behind the creature’s myth and influence its year’s fortune.

Those born under the sign of the Chinese Lunar Dragon in 2024, 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, and every 12th preceding year are said to be ambitious, successful, and charismatic.
