The Design
As part of the Historic Instruments Collection, the obverse depicts some old instruments used for scientific purposes and correlated images: the compass, the sextant, the spyglasses, the hourglass, a compass rose, a theodolite, the moon, the sun, and the globe. On the outer rim, the inscription “HISTORIC INSTRUMENTS” refers to the coin’s collection.
On a smaller circle on the right is an image of Queen Elizabeth II depicted by Ian Rank-Broadley. It is common to have Her Majesty’s portrait on coins that belong to the Commonwealth realm countries. Along with the effigy, the inscriptions read: “ELIZABETH II,” “COOK ISLANDS,” and “10 DOLLARS.”
The only inscriptions engraved on the obverse side are “ASTROLABE” and “2023.” The whole surface of the reverse side showcases the astrolabe, with Arabic letters and signs, as its creation is attributed to the Arabs.
