The Design

The American Gold Eagle coins showcase the same design since its launch in 1986, but the reverse side got an updated version of the bald eagle to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the program.

The new reverse design is a creation of Jennie Norris, who gave the Eagle’s head a frontal close-up with starring eyes, highlighted by the relief applied to the design details. The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches over the Eagle’s head, followed by the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Encircling the outer rim, separated by three five-pointed stars, read “50 DOLLARS” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD”, standing for the coin's face value, weight, and metal content.

The obverse features Lady Liberty depicted by Saint-Gaudens, originally for the 1907 $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin. The word “LIBERTY” arches over Lady Liberty. She carries a torch and an olive branch, with the Capitol Building on the lower left and the year of the coin’s issuance on the right. The symbolism refers to the nation’s direction to enlightenment and peace.

The American Eagle Series

Released in 1986, the American Eagles Series became the most successful coin program worldwide. The series premiered with Silver and Gold Eagles 1 oz coins in the same year. The Gold Eagles faced stiff competitors in the bullion market, as Gold Krugerrands and Canadian Maple Leafs were solid already.

But the coins’ credibility conquered their place in the spotlight. The inclusion of Gold fractional sizes widened the options for gold coins. In contrast, the Silver Eagle remained 1 oz with varying finishes: Proof and Burnished.

Over the years, Platinum and Palladium Eagles brought metal content variation.

The MintCertified First30 Sealed Tube

The MintCertified Tube houses 20 coins from those minted in the first 30 days of Gold Eagles production in the US Mint facilities.

The coins are separated and certified in the facilities, placed in the tubes, and immediately sealed. Therefore, the coins remain untouched during the packing process until reaching their final destination.
