2021 American Silver Eagle First Issue Type 2 Monster Box
For 35 years, the gold and silver American Eagle coins had an identical design, with the year of the issue being the sole difference. Late in 2020, however, the United States Mint revealed that the most popular bullion product, the American Eagle, would receive a new reverse design in 2021 for the first time in history. Because the coin's design had not been changed since its creation in 1986, this modification was historic.
The United States Mint set aside Silver Eagles from the last manufacturing run of the original design and the first production run of the new design because they recognized the significance of the transition. As a result, The 2021 American Silver Eagle First Issue Type 2 Monster Box is now available. The Silver eagles in these monster boxes feature the Type 2 reverse design from the first 200,000 Silver Eagles ever struck with the new design.
The only method to tell if a monster box is part of the collection is by looking at the serial number on the monster box. The first 200,000 Silver Eagles with the new design were struck between May 5th to May 13th, with serial numbers ranging from 250001 to 250400 (400 boxes). The boxes are also labeled with a “BF” beneath the “2021” label. The BF refers to the Type B design, first 200,000 minted.
Silver Eagle Obverse Design
Adolph. A Weinman’s classic depiction of Lady Liberty is featured in the obverse of the 2021 Silver Eagle coin. In her streamlined robes, the goddess Liberty is shown pacing towards a sun that sheds the prominent landforms of the horizon.
Holding an olive branch in her left arm, while reaching forward with her right arm, Lady Liberty is depicted mantled by an American flag that dances with the breeze. To her right, the US motto present on all US coins, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is minted along with the word "LIBERTY," which goes around the top of the coin with spread-out characters. The coin year "2021" is found near the feet of Lady Liberty.
The obverse face features a “W” beneath the words “In God We Trust.” This W is a tribute to Adolph A. Weinman, the artist who designed the original Lady Liberty featured on this face. If there were a letter on the reverse side beneath the bald eagle, this would indicate the mint in which the coin was struck. For example, a “W” would mean the coin was minted at West Point Mint.
Silver Eagle Reverse Design
The new 2021 American Silver Eagle reverse design features designer Emily Damtra’s depiction of a bald eagle - America’s national bird - in its natural state, amidst flight, while enveloping an oak branch between its talons, making its way to somewhere of safety, in the moments before landing.
Around the edge of the coin, the inscription reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR”. The national motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, is located above the weight of the coin.
