Although not exactly known, the hourglass was thought to be invented around 1000-1100 AD as a way to keep track of time by a French monk. Since then, it has not only been used to keep time, but has been transformed to exemplify deep metaphors of fleeting time and life. The Perth Mint took the antiqued invention and included it in their most recent coin to create a gorgeous 2 ounce silver coin.

Design:
The interactive coin features a gorgeous hourglass in the center with moveable sand pieces inside. The reverse face features an astronomical design with the sun and moon on each side of the hourglass.
The obverse features various identifying information, including the weight, purity, year of issue and face value of the coin. This side also shows the famous effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Lastly, the hourglass is surrounded by stars to accompany the sun and moon on the opposite side.
