The 2019 1/2 oz Mexican Libertad Silver Coins are the heaviest fractional-weight silver coins issued by the mint this year. They'll make wonderful gifts for people who appreciate the history of the Mexican Mint, the gorgeous designs,
The Mexican Mint (known as the La Casa de Monada de Mexico) was established in 1535 -- making it one of the oldest minting institutions in the Americas. Once Spain bested the Aztec Empire in 1521, Spanish Royals started mapping out a colony in the Americas. However, the immense quantities of precious metals posed quite a challenge for the Spaniards. The only option? Establish a Mint right there in their colony in the Americas.
Each of these coins contains 1/2 troy ounces of 0.999 pure silver. Moreover, they're backed by the Mexican Central Bank and their silver purity and weight is guaranteed by a sovereign nation.
The reverses of these silver coins display the legend "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" (translation: the United Mexican States), surrounded by various coats of arms used by Mexico over the years. Furthermore, the present National Shield is also imprinted on the center of this side. On the other hand, a gorgeous rendition of the Winged Victoria of the Mexican Independence Victory Column makes an appearance on the obverse.
