2012 NGC MS-70 1 oz American Buffalo Gold Coin - Mike Castle Label
In 2006, the US Mint introduced a landmark addition to the bullion market with the Gold Buffalo Coins, the first official 24k gold coin of the United States.
Each coin, composed of 1 Troy oz of 99.99% pure gold, features James Earl Fraser’s iconic Indian Head design from 1913, celebrating America's rich cultural heritage.
Mike Castle, former Governor of Delaware and member of the US House of Representatives played a pivotal role in the creation of several key US coin programs, including the 50 State Quarters Program, the Sacagawea Dollar, the Presidential Dollar Series, the American Platinum Eagle, and the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.
Today, at SD Bullion, you can find 2012 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins, graded as MS-70 coins and sealed in NGC slabs with the exclusive Mike Castle Signature Label.
Coin Highlights
- Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as perfect MS-70 coins by NGC;
- Sealed with the exclusive Mike Castle Signature Label;
- Produced by the US Mint;
- Contains 1 oz of .9999 pure gold;
- Holds a face value of USD 50, backed by the US Government;
- The obverse showcases the Native American Chief;
- The reverse features the American Bison or the Buffalo.
The Design
On the obverse, James Earl Fraser’s Native American Chief design portrays a right-profile bust that combines traces from Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons.
This side also features the word “LIBERTY” in front of the Native’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials.
On the other side, a giant American Bison in an upstanding depiction occupies most of the reverse surface, resembling a Buffalo. Hence, the coin’s moniker.
It also features the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” referring to the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.
An NGC MS-70 coin
Coin grading services like NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company appraise and grade coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70, depending on their condition.
MS means Mint State, referring to coins fabricated with the same shape as a popular business coin that remained uncirculated. 70, the highest grade on the scale, is for a coin with no visible flaws.
