Designed by Christian Gobrecht and first struck in 1840, the $2.50 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins are important pieces of US history. These particular Random Year $2.50 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins are in good shape (VF+) for coins that are over a century old.
These designs were used for close to 70 years (1840 to 1907). This coin is incredibly unique in that the 67 years they were produced, there were no design changes. Almost every coin ever produced by the U.S. Mint had its design changed at one time or another. The designer of this coin, Christian Gobrecht, was the third Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1840 until his death in 1844. His Liberty Head designs have been used as an inspiration for coins ever since.
Each of these coins contains 0.121 troy ounces of pure gold. The coins carry a face value of $2.50.
The obverses bear a magnificent rendition of Lady Liberty's left-facing head; the reverses feature a marvelous Heraldic Bald Eagle design inspired by the Great Seal of the United States of America.
